Hockey Tough: Sabres Announcer Takes A Puck To The Face, Continues The Broadcast Like A Hero
Rob Ray was a big, mean, nasty son of a bitch back in his playing days. He led the NHL in penalty minutes twice in his career, and had 9 seasons where he was in the top 10 in penalty minutes. Most of them, of course, came from fighting majors. The man had 27 fights in just the 1995-96 season alone.
This was the heyday of heavyweights in the NHL. We're talking guys like Tie Domi, Tony Twist, Donald Brashear. Our guy Rob Ray has gotten his skull bashed by some of the baddest dudes to ever play the game. So a little puck to the face while he's on the call between the benches on the Sabres' broadcast? That's nothing for Razor.
That sick bastard didn't even leave the game. Just gets patched up real quick, bleeding all over the place, and sticks around to do his job. Because that's what Razor Rob Ray is always going to do. If his team needs him to bleed, then he'll bleed. It doesn't matter if he hasn't played in 20 years or not, being an enforcer is a lifestyle. Guys who are wired like that don't just lose it because they're not playing anymore.
You think Tony Romo is staying to call the rest of a game after something like that? You think Ray Allen is staying to call the rest of a game after something like that? Hockey players, and broadcasters, are just a different breed.
P.S. -- Sabres won 5-2.
