Pistons Owner Tom Gores Told Fans He Won't Sell The Team And That Everything Is Going Well "Other Than Winning"

This is kind of what I was worried about. People demand that owners speak, but sometimes, the best things are left unsaid. Look, I know that I'm not popular among Pistons fans right now. I'm not going to recap the last week of blogs. I've got enough hate about it. I think the one thing that we can all agree on is that what's happening to the Detroit Pistons is unacceptable, not just this year but throughout the entire tenure years of the Tom Gores era. He took over a proud franchise and has watched like Nero playing a fiddle as Rome burned to the ground on his watch. Yesterday, he finally made a public appearance and dropped one of the dumbest quotes a person can say.

I don't even know where to start. The "other than winning" quote will go down on Mount Rushmore as one of the dumbest things ever said by somebody involved in a Detroit team's front office. It's right up there with Ken Holland saying, "If you're looking for cups, you've come to the wrong place," or Chris Ilitch telling Detroit fans that he's pleased with the progress as the Tigers were in the midst of a 96 loss season 7 years into a rebuild. It's hard to disagree with Gores, though. Let's take it one step further. If you ignore winning, his lack of availability, his drunken escapades inside of Little Caesars Arena, referring to Chauncey Billups's family as "The Chauncey family" the night he had his jersey retired, and making Monty Williams the highest-paid coach in the NBA just so he could lose 26 in a row, then Tom Gores might as well just be the best owner in sports.

I don't know if this will be controversial, but in general, I don't care if the owner of my team is an upstanding citizen. Of course, you prefer that the people who run your organization have a good head on their shoulders, but it's not their job. I don't care if a firefighter knows how to make fucking cakes. His job is to put out fires. When you own a sports team, your job is to put out the most competitive product possible. That does not mean winning a championship year in and year out but maintaining competency. Owning a sports team seems like it's the one enterprise where you can openly not care and somehow get rewarded for it.

There has to be such a feeling of hopelessness going through the hearts and minds of Pistons fans right now. Usually, when changes are demanded in sports, it ends up happening. It might take a while, but eventually there's turnover. I don't know if there will be turnover with the Detroit Pistons. Even if Troy Weaver is fired, what faith do Detroit fans have that Tom Goris has what it takes to bring in the right person? He's done nothing but fail since he's been the owner here, but don't worry, everything's going great, except for what he was brought here to do.
