Ref Raises Wrong Fighter's Hand And Makes For A SUPER Awkward Decision Announcement
The UFC just had a La La Land/Moonlight false announcement moment in Toronto - but the announcement was right, the referee/crowd just misheard it! That was weird as fuck!
Quick backstory: Sean Woodson just went in there and pretty handily beat fan-favorite Charles Jourdain in his home country, to the point where he was nearing -1000 on the live line by the time the fight ended, but when the decision announcement rolled in - it was a split!
This was shocking in and of itself, but things got much crazier real quick, when the referee raised Charles Jourdain's hand as Sean Woodson's name was announced as the winner by Bruce Buffer. I guess he thought he heard "Charles" and not "Sean"?!
I don't know if the crowd was reacting to Jourdain's hand getting raised or if they also misheard Buffer, but they went nuts right away (HUGE POP) making the following "….Woodson!" even harder to hear. It was actually Daniel Cormier in the octagon for his post-fight interview who had to break the news to the fighters and clear up the confusion.
If you're Woodson - that probably feels like the best sigh of relief in your life. Like thinking you lost your wallet because you didn't feel it in your pants pocket, but then remembering it was in your coat pocket. You thought a win was a sure thing going into that decision being read, then thought it was egregiously robbed from you, and then you realize it was a sure thing after all. If you're Jourdain, though, that sucks more than I could imagine. You just got to feel the high/rush of adrenaline from winning a UFC fight in your home country for the first time, crowd going wild for you, and then it's ripped right outta your hands. Go home and celebrate your loss with half the money you thought you were getting paid. Brutal.
Usually, I wouldn't recommend fighters tweet through their losses, but Jourdain is so ridiculous on there I kinda hope he does….
….and for old times sake, here's one where Bruce Buffer actually did announce the wrong winner….
h/t Jesse McDaid for that last Bruce Buffer clip
