One of Us: Max Homa Has Decided To Get Really Really Drunk After His Golf Round

What a legend. The guy is the best interview in sports. He's both thoughtful and thoughtless in his responses every time a mic is in front of him. He says exactly what's on his mind and nothing less.

Who wouldn't want to get tanked after a Top 5 at the Masters? There's so many mixed emotions that come with it, especially for a Top 10 player like Max. Sure, he was right there to start the day with the opportunity to achieve a lifelong dream... it's an absolute dagger to not get that done, especially with such a tough break on 12 that really should not have penalized him in the way that it did. But at the same time, major championship contention is a mountain that has been a slow climb for him, much like establishing himself was a PGA Tour mainstay was. He took a big step forward today and is getting a real nice paycheck too. That's a serious high and low, all baked into a single day. I'd have a drink in my hand before I signed the damn scorecard.

The "haven't drank in a really really really long time" comment was the headline grab, but he was a walking quote all weekend.

The quote about reminding himself that he's a dog was such a baller quote and is oozing with the type of self-affirming talk that he's always been open about.

There were a couple more gems in his post-round presser today that are too good not to share. One summed up those complex feelings of both success and failure in how the day played out for him.

Q. How would you sum up how you feel leaving this week?

MAX HOMA: It's bittersweet, I guess, because I feel accomplished but I feel like it doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things. But I just feel like I learned. I feel like I took a big leap. The rhetoric on me, and this is from myself, as well, is I have not performed in these things, and I performed for all four days. I didn't throw a 65 in there and sneak my way in. I had to sleep on this every single day, this feeling and kind of this monkey on my back. For me, I think it'll change some things, and then in other ways it'll change nothing at all.

The other quote I love just goes to show how aware he is of what he is "supposed" to say in these things, but gives us the raw answer first anyway.

Q. When you got up to the bushes, what are you thinking? What's going through your head?

MAX HOMA: The honest answer is it didn't feel fair. I hit a really good golf shot, and it didn't feel fair. I've seen far worse just roll back down the hill…

Yeah, the professional answer is these things happen.

I sure hope Max gets himself one of these majors. I don't think there will ever be a more popular winner when he does and the celebration is going to be absolutely legendary.
