Scammers Hav Gone Too Far, Tried Swindling A Grandmother With A Fake Robert Deniro "VIP Fan Card"
NY Post - A savvy granddaughter saved her grandma from divulging sensitive information to a scammer posing online as Robert De Nero.
Gina Morgan, a 76-year-old from South Wales in the United Kingdom, got into a lengthy chit-chat on Facebook with someone posing as the “Godfather Part II” star, Caters News reported.
She didn’t seem to be phased by the red carpet and other photos he sent, that the user name was “Robert De Niro page,” or that he was trying to peddle “membership cards,” not unlike a scam that might have been pulled off by the actor’s character Jimmy Conway from “Goodfellas.”
“That is not Robert De Niro!” her granddaughter Shannon Rich, 28, shouts in a video showing the message exchange where Morgan met the faker.
Turns out the scammers were trying to get the senior citizen to shell out $500 for a “VIP fan card” that would falsely promise “every access” to the don — video chats, phone calls and even a visit from the new father, according to Caters.
“There are three types of membership card … I can connect you to my manager about getting it,” a message read.
Rich, however, feels that even if she hadn’t intervened, her grandma would have sharpened up in time before any damage was done. Morgan was skeptical about De Niro’s tuxedo photos, after all.
Too much. Very simply too much and too far. The Scammers have gone too far. I thought we saw everything up to this point. $200 to people trying to try and ride the free Staten Island ferry, Home Depot gift cards, social security, etc etc. We saw everything or so I thought. But here we are, another day another scam, this time more ridiculous and over the top and unbelievable as ever.
This poor innocent grandmother thinks she's getting to meet one of her idols. Jimmy Conway, Ace Rothstein, Jake LaMotta etc. and she's about 2 seconds from giving away her life savings for a "VIP fan card", which I have to ask ... what the hell is a VIP Fan card? Thank God for this granddaughter who stopped this. Also, I want to give the granddaughter props but the one thing she says where she thinks the grandmother would have woken up before not to send the money. Please ... Grandma was ready to give away the bag. EASILY was giving them whatever they asked if she didn't step in.
The other part of this is the losers who are these scammers. How on earth is this just what they do? Wake up... pull some whack ass scam on poor old people and either illegally obtain money or get denied and then try it all again. Just rinse and repeat. Like a 12 year old at a school dance just continuously trying to get a slow dance, just keep moving and shaking until something sticks. What a sad horrific life. How are earth to these people just keep doing this? And is there networking events for these loser or like legends in the game? Like at some conference in Atlantic City, an up and coming scammer pays $25 to watch Billy Long speak about how he's turned octogenarian's retirement money into 4 lambo's and they all sit there and suck his balls as a legend. It's not real life, yet if you told me it happened I would believe it because these people are such absolute lunatics nothing surprises me. Dirtbags.
