'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' Is Reviving The Box Office AND Is A Really Good Movie To Boot

This Summer, the world's favorite Bad Boys are back with their iconic mix of edge-of-your seat action and outrageous comedy but this time with a twist: Miami's finest are now on the run.

So lets start out with the bad news: the box office was DEAD. Summer is typically when studios start dropping their big-budget blockbusters and start raking in the cash. MDW is usually the kickoff event but this year marked the lowest numbers in TWENTY YEARS. Going into June 2023, there were four $100 million dollar movies in the US. Going into this June, there was ONE (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes). We can attribute part of this to inflation and even more to the delayed effects of the writers strike. Either way, it's been BAD.

After 'Furiosa' couldn't get the adult audiences and 'If' and 'Garfield' couldn't get the kids, it was looking dire. Enter 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die'. The fourth movie in a franchise that started nearly thirty years ago with a recent entry that one one of the last box office hits before COVID. Not something you'd necessarily bank on being a huge success. Well, lemme tell you, this movie has done FANTASTIC numbers. A $56 million dollar opening weekend for a Rated R late sequel? Thats fantastic stuff. And the best part is that it is well earned.

I'm about as much of a Bad Boys fan as the next guy. It's a fun, goofy action series with a classic buddy cop dynamic. I'm definitely not as into it as other, late-stage action franchises like Mission: Impossible, which had a sequel come out about a year ago. And yet, this movie had me very engaged! It has some of the best action in the entire franchise, incredible camera work (some of which you can see in the clip at the top of the blog), the funny lines we all expect and a half-decent story. Not only is it better than 'Bad Boys for Life' but I think it might be competing for second place with 'Bad Boys II'! I think my only complaint was that they Roman Pearce'd Marcus a little bit. If you're a fan of the Fast franchise, that will make sense.

Overall, though, it's a really fun movie that I had way more fun watching that I expected to. It's definitely worth the trip to the theater for the action scenes alone.

Anyway, check out todays ep of LCB. We had Klemmer and Robbie back on and had the latter watch 'Gangs of New York' for the first time. It's one of Klemmer's top all-time movies and we had a fun convo about it.
