Donald Sutherland Has Sadly Passed Away at 88

Legendary Hollywood actor Donald Sutherland, whose career stretched from the 1970s to the 2020s, has died at the age of 88.

He is survived by his wife Francine Racette, sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus, and Kiefer and daughter Rachel. The star had four grandchildren.

To me, Donald Sutherland has always been one of the most memorable actors I watched growing up. My dad loved ‘Kelly’s Heroes’ and ‘The Dirty Dozen’ which introduced me to him as the very funny Sgt. Oddball and Pinkley. (Also Animal House, but that was a bit later.) As a teen, I started to know him as a father figure character in fun movies like ‘The Italian Job’. Once my brain formed up, I finally started watching his renowned roles like ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ and ‘Klute’.

With all those in mind, I think you’d be hard pressed to find many actors as well rounded as Donald Sutherland. This is a guy that could sell humor, pain, sternness, weirdness, powerful scaryness(he’s one of the big highlights of the Hunger Games franchise) all equally well. While he never took home the major at the Oscar’s, he is one of those Hollywood institutions that I’m sure will have multiple namesakes in the coming years.

RIP to a titan of the cinema world.
