Analytics Debate: Notre Dame Head Coach Marcus Freeman Says He Would Kick An Extra Point If Down By 14 Late In The Game

On today's Pardon My Take... MARCUS FREEMAN! The Head Coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish joined Mr. Cat and Mr. Commenter on today's show to to talk about this season, his football career, how he recruits, and tons more.

Whenever a football coach joins the show, you will often hear Big Cat or PFT pose a hypothetical regarding specific coaching situations when it comes to analytics. And that was exactly the case once again today. Here was the question posed from the crew to Coach Freeman...

Time on the clock - 3:30 in the 4th quarter

The score - Notre Dame is down by 14 points

The previous play - Notre Dame scores a touchdown to cut its deficit to 8

The question - is Coach Freeman going for 2, or kicking the PAT?

The answer (without hesitation) - Notre Dame is kicking the PAT to make it a 7-point game

We have seen coaches go in different directions with this exact scenario. I will say I'm Team Big Cat on this one. If you get that first 2PC? You suddenly put some additional pressure on your opponent to move the chains a few more times. And if you fail? You're not done just yet. It's still a one possession game, and sending the game to OT is still very realistic.

What do you think? Should coaches take the point or go for two when scoring a touchdown trailing by 14? Sound off in the comments…
