Winning Isn't Everything: WVU Head Coach Neal Brown Thinks Fans Should Keep Showing Up To Games Because Tailgating Is Fun And The Weather Is Nice
The full quote is slightly, *slightly*, better than the original clip. But, uh, you can't say this when you're a head coach in major college football. You for sure can't say this when you're a coach who is on the hot seat and fans are ready to escort out of the city. Having fun doesn't matter. Wins and losses matter, because no one has fun in a loss. People don't care who you lose to or how close it is. Fans only care about winning games, so you don't get to brag about losing to PSU, Pitt and Iowa State.
Needless to say West Virginia fans aren't taking this quote as a good time. Have you met a WVU fan? They are lunatics and I mean that respectfully. They want to see a win, they want to be competitive, they don't want to hear about good weather. These guys are used to shitty weather in WVU and seeing some form of success. You don't burn couches in good weather, you burn couches when it's cold and grey out there.
I don't know how a coach at any level can say this. Fans? Sure, you try to justify that a game won't ruin your week or you won't let a team ruin your good time. But a coach? Their entire life is base around the team. You can try to keep asking for help and encourage fans to keep showing up, but saying were they entertained? Yikes. At least he's right that tailgating is a good time. Fans got that going for them.
