5-0 Liberty Lost as a 27-Point Favorite to 0-6 Kennesaw State, a Team Rated Worse Than 7 Division II Teams
This is the moment we need to all agree as a college football community that we are done even considering Liberty as a remotely serious program for good. We gave them a New Year's Six bowl spot they didn't deserve last year after beating up on a glorified FCS conference and let them thoroughly embarrass themselves against Oregon, but enough is enough. The Flames need to be barred from participation in the College Football Playoff regardless of record for at least the next 10 seasons.
You have to be a real sicko to watch Conference USA football on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, which is precisely why I watch a ton of it. And if you haven't watched the Kennesaw State Owls play this season, just take my word for the fact that they are a wretched football team. S&P+ would have them rated as the 66th-best team in the FCS and eighth in Division II. They had never won a game against an FBS team coming into tonight. They're horrific.
And yet they just beat the best team in C-USA as a four-touchdown underdog because nobody goes into Fifth Third Bank Stadium — right next to a great stretch of chain restaurants on Chastain Road — on a Wednesday night and escapes without a fight.
Good for Kennesaw State for winning this game, but this is unfathomably embarrassing for Liberty. It obviously won't get the publicity that Notre Dame losing to Northern Illinois or Alabama losing to Vanderbilt got, but it's a much worse loss. Jamey Chadwell should be ashamed to show his face in Lynchburg.
But that's why we play the ballgames, folks.
