Throwback Thursday - Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
Just heard this during a Taco Bell commercial and got blasted back to the 1990s when this song was HUGE.
First off, what a sick song name.
Secondly, if you think this song just had a great rhythm and a catchy hook, you're crazy. Look at some of these lyrics-
"Finger tips like memories, I can't forget the curves of your body"
and
"Been around the world and all I see is stupid people are breeding"
mamma mia!
Harvey Danger is/was(?) an indie rock band from Seattle, Washington. They formed in 1993 and released their debut album, Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone?, in 1997.
"Flagpole Sitta" is from that 1997 debut album, and was released as the band's debut single in April 1998 and was met with critical and commercial success, peaking at number 38 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart, and number three on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. (A very big deal in the 90s)
The lyrics tell the story of a guy who is in love with a chick who is dating someone else. He is so obsessed with her that he decides to climb a flagpole and sit there until she notices him.
I'm on a mission to get these going again on Thursdays and build our Backstage spotify account come hell or high water.
Throw some suggestions in the comments and keep on rockin in the free world.
p.s. - if you love alternative rock, classic rock, and indie, here's a mix I made a few years ago that cracks.
