We Finally Got A Poster For The New Superman (And The First Trailer Drops This Week!)

We finally got the first poster for James Gunn's new 'Superman' reboot this morning, along with an official synopsis....

James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a SUPERMAN who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

....and the announcement that the first teaser trailer will drop on Thursday at 9am ET....

I think the bright imagery on this poster, along with the "Look up." tagline and John Williams/Hans Zimmer scores that are weaved into the announcement video are all 'green flags' for this movie if that makes any sense. Like, everything I've seen thus far tells me James Gunn and co. understand how vivid and hopeful and joyous Superman should be. Not shadowy and dark like uh, you know….

Calm down Snyderheads - I don't even HATE 'Man of Steel' or Henry Cavill's portrayal of Superman, but it was just way darker in tone than any movie in this franchise should be, and features so many "BUT" justifications; I love the Clark Kent childhood scenes, BUT it's pretty stupid when Johnathan Kent refuses to let Clark use his powers to save him. I love Michael Shannon's performance as General Zod, BUT I don't like that they leveled the city (basically 150+ 9/11s) and snapped his neck in the final act. Shit like that. I feel similarly about Brandon Routh's 'Superman Returns' - I love the scene where he lands the plane, BUT he never throws a single punch in that movie. I love the bullet hitting his eye and flattening out, BUT AGAIN, he never throws a single punch in the whole friggin movie! Kevin Spacey is pretty good as Lex Luthor, BUT he's Kevin Spacey.

I'm ready for a Superman movie with no "BUT" critiques I have to justify. I want a happy, light, optimistic Superman movie that inspires me the same way the original Christopher Reeve movies do. I want Superman saving cats from trees and helping old ladies cross the street and telling kids to do good. And I think James Gunn and our new Man of Steel David Corenswet are the right people for the job. I've loved everything he's touched in the superhero genre and adore the main inspirations for this movie (which include All Star Superman, Superman: For All Seasons), I think the DCU casting we've seen so far is amazing, and being this is the big kickstart of the new universe - they know this has to be a home run. Not a single, not a double, not a triple - a home run. Preferably a grand slam.

Fingers crossed that Thursday's teaser blows our socks off.

P.S. The Christopher Reeve documentary DC Studios made is now on Max, and I've heard it's incredible. I'll definitely be giving it a watch this week….
