'Don't Call Them Cinderella, Call Them National Champs' - Vermont Soccer Pulled Off A Miracle, Won The National Title On An Awesome Walk-Off Goal
Quick shout out to Dalen Cuff, who nailed that call. Perfect line and something that Jim Nantz would deliver. But this is about Vermont, who somehow won the national championship in soccer last night on this walk-off goal. I know they were good, ranked in the top-20, but they were an unseeded team from America East who beat the 7 seed, 2 seed, 3 seed and 13 seed en route to a title. It's not like the NCAA Tournament, the top-16 teams get a seed and not to mention Vermont had an extra match because of byes.
Again, we're talking about Vermont soccer here. When you think of college soccer and national titles you start to think of UNC, Virginia, Indiana, Wake, UCLA, Clemson, Maryland. Teams for the most part in a warmer climate or historical soccer dominance. Now you add Vermont to the list. It's the first team national title for the school. It's the first non-skiing (checks out) national title for the school. Somewhere TJ Sorrentine and Taylor Coppenrath are smiling. Sorrentine especially since that pass was from *ahem* the parking lot.
The pass was awesome and then the ability to make a move and finish under pressure is tougher than people will give it credit for. You can't help it, your brain starts living out the dream of 'make this and I win a national title.' Every kid dreams of that, no matter what the sport is. Dude buried it and immediately go to celebration mode. Awesome. So shout out Vermont, a national title and one hell of a call.
