WATCH: The First Teaser For James Gunn's 'Superman' Is AWESOME

Follows the titular superhero as he reconciles his heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way in a world that views this as old-fashioned.

This is pretty much everything we could have wanted out of a teaser. Didn't give to much a away while still giving us a glimpse into Metropolis, the life of both Kent and Superman and the rest of the cast. Visually, it looks like we're out of the dark and dreary world of the Snyder verse which is also a relief.

As you can see it's a pretty solid cast. David Corenswet might be a relative unknown to a lot of people but he has been really solid in the stuff I've seen him in and by god does he have the look. Rachel Brosnahan is coming off an incredible run with 'The Marvelous Ms. Maisel' and after that, we get some interesting characters.

1. Hawkgirl - Isabella Merced (Sicario 2, Instant Family). Hawkgirl, as you can imagine, has big ass wings and can fly. She can also communicate with birds, has super strength and is technically immortal.

2. Mister Terrific - Edi Gathegi (X-Men First Class). This guy is kind of similar to Tony Stark as far as being a genius inventor millionaire.

3. The Green Lantern - Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Suicide Squad). Most people know him. Basically a space cop with the green lantern powers from the ring.

4. Metamorpho - Anthony Carrigan (Barry). This guy is an immortal shapeshifter which is kinda cool. I'm mostly interested in Anthony Carrigan's part of this equation because he was so god damn funny in 'Barry'.

5. The Engineer - María Gabriela de Faría. A liquid machine that can morph into weapons. Basically the T1000 but guns. I don't know this actress at all but that doesn't mean shit.

6. Rick Flag Sr. - Frank Grillo (Warrior, Kingdom). He's currently playing this roll (Rick Flag's dad) in the animated series 'Creature Commandos' which has been pretty solid so far. I'm a Grillo guy so I like him getting the chance to actually play a character vs the shit luck he got handed in Marvel.

7. Supergirl - Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon). I don't know a ton about supergirl other than the fact that she's superman's Kryptonian cousin. Alcock was great in HotD so hopefully she can make this character work.

8. Krypto the Superdog - Just a dog with Superman's powers. I assume it will be more like a cameo appearance for him.

On the backend, this is directed by James Gunn who has obviously had incredible success in the comic book movie genre. When you really think about 'Guardians of the Galaxy', it should NOT have worked. Mainstream fans had no god damn clue who they were and it was starring the 5th billed guy from 'Parks and Rec' and Bradley Cooper as a talking Racoon. That should have been DOA! But Gunn made it his own and turned that relatively blank canvas into some of the best movies in the MCU. Similarly, he did that with 'Suicide Squad' by dredging out a bunch of D-list superheroes and making them lovable.

This is obviously a very different test. Superman is THE superhero. Like, 1A. The tires have a lot of tread, people know the character and have expectations. Christopher Reeve is superhero royalty, there were 2 more goes at the character on the big screen in the last two decades and there were plenty of TV versions. What works in Gunn's favor is that those recent adaptations are not looked back on in a very positive light. 'Superman Returns' is mostly forgettable and pretty much nobody liked the moody ass tone of 'Man of Steel' (although I'll fight for Cavill as a good Superman in a bubble). This all means the people are eager for a GOOD adaptation and Gunn seems to get the character.

That synopsis is exactly what we should all want out of Superman.  This should come out July of next year.
