This Is College Hoops: Rick Pitino Openly Admits That Kadary Richmond Plays For St. John's Now Because Seton Hall Couldn't Pay Him Enough In NIL
Rick Pitino wasn't going to let former assistants and players hog the great press conference quotes. He had to deliver one brutally honest opinion on college basketball after beating Seton Hall by 28. Here's the simple backstory Kadary Richmond, the best player on Seton Hall a year ago, transferred to St. John's in the offseason. People wondered why, he said the right things like wanting to play for a legend like Pitino, that normal stuff.
Then Pitino blew it all up. Not that it was a secret or anything but Pitino lays it out pretty plain and simple. The NIL money is not a level playing field. Then again, college basketball was never a level playing field. Maryland Eastern Shore (a real Division I school) never had the same level playing field as Maryland. The list goes on and on. That's what happens when you have 364 schools in Division I. But now you're hearing dollar amounts attached to players and people lose their mind even more.
Again, the bigger problem is the transfer portal. NIL isn't the problem. It won't happen, but the easy fix is 1 free transfer for everyone, after that it's a one-year sitout again unless your coach leaves. Your coach leaves you can transfer again for free no matter what. There are going to be broke schools (Seton Hall) and there are going to be schools with unlimited NIL (Kansas State). Doesn't mean unlimited NIL is going to work. Kansas State and Arkansas - the two schools who boasted about NIL and transfers - fucking stink.
That said, saying this after you beat Seton Hall by 28 just feels mean. Then again, maybe he's trying to rile up the Seton Hall crowd. Get someone with a voice to put up some money so they can't complain anymore?
He also ain't wrong:
