“Soto Was Tough, This is Worse” Steve Cohen Is Holding Back No Punches When Talking About The Alonso Negotiations
If you are paying attention to The Mets right now the big topic is obviously whether or not we can bring back Pete Alonso. There’s been a ton of back and forth in terms of offers and what his market value is.
You can believe whichever side of the argument you want. The Mets are making what they believe to be fair offers, and Alonso’s camp is holding out for what they think is fair. When I say Alonso’s camp I mean super agent and super scumbag Scott Boras. All time scumbag.
The thing worth noting here is that while Alonso is saying he is being lowballed, there haven’t been too many teams beating down the door with groundbreaking offers. In fact until Toronto came up this week, I had heard crickets. Which maybe points to the fact the Mets (shockingly) know what they are doing here and are holding firm with a fair offer.
The real story here is two fold I’d you ask me. 1 is this. Alonso has been a Met his whole life, mostly with dark times and limited success in terms of the team record. He’s been a cornerstone in the lineup and has finally seen the team break through with some big success in last year’s NLCS appearance. It would really suck if he wasn’t part of this team now that we have a shot to really compete. It also would be in his best interests to be in a lineup surrounded by big bats where he can’t be pitched around.
The second part is this. I cannot believe how honest Cohen has been with this whole ordeal. Basically laying out his entire side of the story so fans cannot blame him down the road if it goes sour. I am fascinated that an owner would be so open with his comments but that’s why Stevie is different and that’s why the fans love him.
It’s going to be interesting to see how this all shakes out but I will say I want Pete back on the team because he’s been a great Met and he deserves to see this through.
