I'm Loving This Show "Paradise" On Hulu
Every so often a TV show comes along that grabs my attention, but it's few and far between. I'm not a televisionfile like say, KFC, who watches EVERYTHING. Most of the time I would rather re-watch the same shows I know that I already like than give a new show a try. Not that I don't watch anything new, but again, it's few and far between. The worst is when you finally do try a new show and you're stoked about it and end up hating it. That was me with "Silo", for example. I love dystopian shit and I thought the premise was right up my alley, and I ended up grudge-watching it for the most part. They took a good premise and mixed it with bad acting and cliche television tropes and it bored me to tears. I hear the 2nd season isn't much better either.
So then came along this show "Paradise" on HULU. Lemme tell ya, John Feitelberg came into the office RAVING about Paradise after the 1st episode dropped. He was talking about it like he just won the lottery. He said he was grabbing people on the streets of New York asking if they watched it. I hadn't seen him that excited since Sour Patch Kids launched a red-only bag. I immediately went into a side room and watched the first episode and was hooked INSTANTLY. Now after 4 episodes I can safely say this show rocks. It fucking ROCKS. It's a combination of like 4 different genres, it makes you care about the characters in a LOST-esque sort of way, and it doesn't slow down. It doesn't drag things out. It doesn't make you wait long periods for things to happen, SHIT JUST KEEPS HAPPENING!!! Payoffs that you would think they would save for the season finale just happen in the middle of episode 3. The end of episode 4 blew my socks so far off they're in another galaxy at this point.
The acting is fantastic in this show. Sterling K. Brown is obviously the man, but shout out to this dude Jon Beavers too who plays Billy who fucking crushed it so hard in episode 4. I don't want to give any spoilers away so I'll stop there but wooo mama he was good.
I'm not saying Paradise is the next Breaking Bad or The Wire or whatever you consider peak television, but I am saying it's one of the most enjoyable and best acted new shows in a long time. It's doing this 1-2 punch right now with Severance that I am thoroughly enjoying. 2 new shows that each release 1 new episode per week is a delight to have. I am very much enjoying having a weekly show to look forward to instead of binging 10 at once. Call me old fashioned but it's much more fun this way, plus you can talk about it all week and recommend it to others, instead of sitting inside on a Saturday, zipping through them, and moving on. Week-to-week is the absolute premier way to watch new TV shows and I cannot even hear an argument for the alternative. (I say that is best for new shows, binging is obviously best for re-watches).
Give "Paradise" a shot, why won't ya? I promise you'll be hooked from the pilot and only grow more interested as it goes on. That's the Barstool Nate Guarantee.
