Connecticut Senator Wants To Pass A Law That Movies Have To Start On Time

SOURCE - State Senator Martin Looney of New Haven, Conn., proposed bill no. 797on Jan. 21, in an effort to “require that each movie advertisement or listing include, and separately list, the scheduled start time for (1) the movie trailers and advertisements that precede the advertised or listed movie, and (2) the advertised or listed movie.”

Looney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

“It seems to be an abuse of people's time,” the lawmaker said in an interview with The Register Citizen about his proposed bill.

I don't love the idea of new laws but I don't hate this concept. It's ridiculous that when I go to my nearby AMC, the movies never start until 20 minutes after the listed time. I went to a Cinemark (great theaters by the way) and it was 30 minutes of mostly lousy trailers until Dogman started (which wasn't that bad)!

I go to the movies a lot so I know this going in and typically try to arrive 10 minutes or so after the listed time. But why are we going through this crazy coming in late bullshit when the movie could just start on time?

All of these trailers before the movies make no sense to me. If I have a big hit movie that was selling out, I'd want as few trailers as possible so maybe I could squeeze in an extra showing of the movie that night. There used to be like 3 trailers before a movie back in the 90's. Now, you can sometimes hit double digits.

Also, do trailers before a movie help that much in 2025? I feel like younger people get their trailers off of YouTube and are interested in a movie because they saw it there than anywhere else.

The funniest thing about this whole thing is you know this state senator showed up to some movie right when it was listed to go on and must have been so pissed to sit through those trailers. Imagine sitting next to this guy while he ranted and raved about it?  Now, some could say that there is better stuff that Senator Looney could be doing with his time. For example, Connecticut has the 2nd highest combination of state and local taxes in the country. Instead of coming up with plans to control how people spend their 20 minutes before a movie, maybe working on ways to save those same people money might be a better project?

But, I digress. As long as Sen. Looney is fighting for his constituents, they may never have to see the horrible Minecraft trailer ever again. That alone may be worth higher taxes for the folks in Connecticut.
