The Wonderful And Gracious Juan Soto Bought Brett Baty A New Car For Giving Up Number 22 On The Mets
Would you look at that? It turns out not only is Juan Soto a generational baseball player but he is also a generational human being! I know the cynical people out there, of which there are many, will say that Juan Soto peeling off a crumb of his 3/4 billion dollar contract to buy a new SUV (likely fully loaded at the highest trim) for the guy that gave him his number is the least he could do. But the fact of the matter is Juan Soto didn't have to do shit for Brett Baty.
In fact, I guarantee if Scott Boras told the Mets they needed to trade Brett Baty to whatever team Juan Soto chose in order to free up number 22, David Stearns would've shipped him there without question. It doesn't matter if it was to Atlanta or Siberia. Brett Baty would be taking cuts right now wherever Juan Soto wanted him to because that's the type of power he had over the winter.
Instead, Brett is pushing a new whip around town (do people still call cars "whips?) in exchange for wearing a new number as he looks to reboot his Major League career and Juan gets to continue wearing the number that has been on his back as he's put up Hall of Fame numbers to start his legendary career. That's called a win/win for everyone involved, which is something that the Mets didn't have often during the Wilpon days yet seem to be a common occurrence during the Reign of Cohen.
