Extremely Wholesome: Tony Hawk Posted a Heartfelt Message to Kurt Cobain About Their Shared Grandson, Who May Be The Coolest Kid Alive Today
Rarely do I write about something that is 100% wholesome, and not either heavily layered in sarcasm or heavily poking fun at a person or story. Rarely does something go viral that I'm confident will have a 100% approval rating. But this could be one of those things. Not to be over dramatic, but that's just about the most "Awwww.." inspiring post I've ever seen on the internet. Just a nice, wholesome, heartfelt message from Tony Hawk to Kurt Cobain about Kurt Cobain himself, his lovely daughter, and their wondrous grandchild.
If you didn't know (I'd totally forgotten about it until today), Tony Hawk's son, and Kurt Cobain's daughter are married. In September of last year, they had son. Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk.
Any man (and probably most women) around my age, or anyone born in the late 80's or 90's, was extremely aware of who Tony Hawk was growing up. If you could identify a skateboard, then you were familiar with Tony Hawk's work. He was a pioneer of modern skateboarding. The face of one of the greatest video game franchises in the history of video games. There's a good 10-15 songs that the second I hear them, my mind immediately goes to Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4. Everybody remembers when Tony Hawk first landed the 900.
Nowadays, there are 9-year old kids nailing that trick. On back to back to back jumps no less. But it doesn't matter. To this day, Tony Hawk is still the most recognized name in skateboarding. I'd imagine for the general public, he probably always will be. I can't remember a single negative headline about the guy. Never have I heard one of his skateboarding peers say a bad word about him. I'm not going to pretend I'm fully plugged into the world of skateboarding, but from what I've seen, Tony Hawk is just an all-around, genuinely awesome dude.
I was a little young to be there for the rise of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. But still, Nirvana defines an entire genre of music for me. When you think of grunge, you immediately think of Nirvana. Hell, when I think of alternative music at all, Nirvana is one of the first two or three bands that comes to mind. The Nevermind album cover (naked baby) is one of the most iconic album covers in the history of music.

The whole track list is incredible, but the first 5 songs in particular are as great of a 5 song run as you'll ever find on an album (Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Come As You Are, Breed, Lithium)
The passing of Kurt Cobain is tragic, and full of controversy and lore, all which adds to the mystique of Kurt Cobain as a person. Since he died before I was old enough to remember, Kurt Cobain is almost like a mythical figure to me. Crazy to think how if things had gone different, Nirvana would still be young enough to be touring in 2025
I say all that to say… this baby has some badass grandpas. Outside of maybe grandson's of war heroes, it's gotta be the most badass pair of grandpa's a kid can have. It's almost too much pressure. Unless this child is ripping the Free Bird solo while doing a McTwist by age 12, I don't know how he could possibly live up to what society believes a man with Tony Hawk and Kurt Cobain's blood coursing through his veins to be. I mean seriously… Tony Hawk basically invented skateboarding. Kurt Cobain basically invented grunge music. Those are two of the most stereotypically "badass" and "hardcore" things the world has to offer. What incredible genes to have. It's a shame that kids his age will probably never appreciate that as much as people our age will. But nevertheless… that's a damn cool kid. A damn cool family.
Tony Hawk's post was just a real nice piece of internet content that is only good. You love it see it. As much of a shame as it is that Kurt Cobain isn't around today to witness his grandchild grow up in person, it's awesome to see his name live on… in conjunction with the name of the greatest skateboarder of all-time in Tony Hawk.
