Mookie Betts May Miss Opening Day Thanks To A Mystery Illness That Has Caused Him To Lose 23 Pounds In 2 Weeks And Has Him Down To 157 Pounds
We've got some kinda scary stuff going on here with Mookie Betts as the season is about to kick off. It's kind of flown under the radar with the weird, fake Opening Day in Tokyo last week but Mookie is definitely going through some shit. An illness that they just don't know what it is has caused Mookie to drop down to 157 pounds, 23 pounds lost over the last 2 weeks. Now he's not a big guy at all, but my guess is he usually plays somewhere between 175 and 180 pounds? So losing 23 pounds off your playing weight and not being able to hold down any solid food without puking isn't great at all. The Dodgers and Betts should be pretty worried, even if it is some sort of flu or norovirus, it's pretty scary for them to not diagnose him yet.
I mean look at him walking off the field in Tokyo. We knew he was a little under the weather as they were headed over there so it wasn't a shock that he missed the Dodgers 2 games. But you can tell by watching him slowly lumber off the field, just doesn't look like he has an ounce of energy.
He was so sick they debated on just sending him back home to the states but ultimately he stayed in Japan. He did say both flights were pretty brutal and man I couldn't imagine having to deal with this sickness while being in the air for that long. And yeah, they're basically in a studio apartment on these flights and not sitting in C38 on a Southwest flight, but that still isn't a comfortable setting for someone that sick.
This has been bothering him for over a week now so you know it's pretty serious, again losing that much weight, especially in-season can't be easy on your body. Plus going through a ton of blood tests and appointments can't be fun for a guy who was hoping to play baseball this week. Hopefully they're able to figure out what's causing this and we can get to see Mookie on the field sometime soon. They mentioned that he was going through workouts, just can't keep solid food down but he is getting liquids and smoothies. Betts feeling good enough to attempt to go through a pregame workout seems like a step in the right direction too, so let's hope he's on the upswing. Scary stuff regardless and hopefully he can add some of that weight back and get back onto the diamond, who knows about Opening Day for him but that shouldn't be the real big concern here. There's also a lot of people calling him "Pukey Betts" but I wouldn't do that.
