Sidney Crosby Is The First To Break One Of Gretzky's Records This Year, Becomes First Player In NHL History To Have 20 Point-Per-Game Seasons

The moment that Sidney Crosby entered the National Hockey League, you knew exactly what you could expect out of him on a night to night basis. This is a freak of nature who seems solely dedicated and focused on the sport of hockey. He seemingly never takes a single day off. I'm sure he has a few hobbies outside of hockey, but you never hear about or see him do anything else besides be on the ice. That level of dedication has led to a level of consistency that we've never seen before.

Quite literally.

Sidney Crosby entered the NHL 20 seasons ago. It started off with a 102-point rookie campaign in 2005-06. And he's had at least 1 point-per-game in every season since. Obviously there was a lockout shortened 2012-13 season. Obviously there was a COVID shortened 2020-21 season. And obviously there have been stretches along the way where Crosby has had to deal with a bunch of concussions.

Sidney Crosby is currently 9th all-time in career points. He missed about 100 games with concussion/neck injuries from 2010-12, and then obviously missed somewhere around 60-70 games due to the lockout and COVID. If he doesn't miss all those games and continues scoring at his 1.25 ppg pace? He's currently 2nd all-time in points behind only Gretzky.

The point I'm trying to make here is that there have been plenty of players throughout the history of hockey whose careers have been completely derailed by injuries. They've been rendered to nothing more than a bunch of "what if's". But Sidney Crosby has found a way to keep producing year after year after year. He might not have played 82 games per year his entire career, but he's always produced for 2 full decades at this point. Plenty of guys have great stretches of their career, but this has been Sid's entire career. From 18 to 37, he's consistently found his name on the scoresheet every time he's on the ice. And oh yeah, he also managed to win 3 Cups and 2 Olympic Golds and a World Cup Gold and a bunch of individual awards along the way.

Who knows how much longer we'll get to watch Sid and Ovi play out there. But it's pretty incredible that 2 of the most ridiculous Gretzky records are going to get broken this year by these two dudes who are just as nasty now as they were before plenty of guys in the league were even born.
