The Braves' First Week of 2025 Might Be One of the Worst for Any Team in the History of Professional Sports
I can't believe Opening Day was one week ago. This time last week, I was a happy man who was excited for baseball's return. In the seven days since, I feel like I have experienced a year's worth of torment and I no longer want to watch anyone wearing an Atlanta Braves uniform attempt to play the game.
The Braves' offensive numbers are truly staggering. They've scored 14 runs in their seven games, five of which came in last night's seventh consecutive loss to start the season. They're hitting .151, the fourth-worst batting average for any team through seven games since 1920. On the rare occasions Atlanta does find a way to get someone on base, the offense is 6-49 with RISP, which is somehow a vast improvement over its 1-34 start. I genuinely didn't know it was possible for things to get this bad.
And then there's the whole thing with the starting left fielder and lone big free agent acquisition being suspended 80 games for using performance-enhancing drugs, which also makes him ineligible for the postseason. Though that may not end up being of any concern, given that no team in MLB history has ever made the postseason after beginning a season 0-7.
The biggest punishment of all is that there are 155 games of this remaining. It seems impossible that things could get any worse than they are right now, but if there's a group that will find a way, it's this one. Even a 5-0 lead wasn't enough for Atlanta to win a game last night and I'm not sure how many of those they'll be able to scrape together over the next six months.
Friday's home opener ceremonies should be interesting.
