The New Era: We Have A Report That At Least Eight College Basketball Teams Will Have A Roster Of $10 Million Next Year
I know NIL seems fake in the sense of numbers thrown around. But this? This is the first time I can remember seeing a report like this out there. Eight teams expected to have a $10,000,000 is absurd. We know who one of those teams are. Pretty obvious:
BYU has unlimited money. That's how you get a recruit like AJ Dybantsa to go with Richie Saunders, Rob Wright and everyone else. I also would take a guess at Duke and Michigan being in there. They are bringing in either monster transfers or monster recruits. But this is where the money gets ridiculous. There's no value, at least one that you can tell, that these players are bringing back to the school. Winning a title? Sure. All that factors in at the end.
But this is where we are now. It's pay-for-play, which is fine, as long as we all say that. People are going to spend money. It's not THAT much different from old recruiting where it was 'what can you give me' played out. It just comes down to finding players who don't care about the most amount of money vs fit or whatever.
I know people will be ready to blame this for the Tournament, but we still need to see. This year was obviously all chalk and favorites. But, Florida wasn't a huge NIL spending team. There are way bigger ones. Same goes for Houston. It'll be more do we get the first round upsets and the Cinderella making a Sweet 16/Elite Eight. Just get used to this, this is where college sports are now until some sort of barriers come into play.
