UCLA QB Joey Aguilar Commits to Tennessee, Completing a Swap for Nico Iamaleava
There are now trades in college football.
One day after UCLA officially announced the addition of Tennessee transfer Nico Iamaleava, the Vols are reportedly replacing their former quarterback with Joey Aguilar from the same school where their former starter ended up. Aguilar had transferred to UCLA in December after two years at Appalachian State, but now winds up in Knoxville following the Nico saga.
This seemed a bit on the nose when it became clear Iamaleava was going to be a Bruin, but it obviously makes sense for both Aguilar and UT. Aguilar put up solid numbers at App State and transferred out to be a starter at the Power Four level, so there was no reason for him to stay in Westwood once Nico got there. This actually ended up being a pretty sweet deal for him.
Aguilar isn't a name that jumps off the page for a team that had College Football Playoff aspirations, but he's a solid find when your quarterback tries to hold your program hostage and leaves in the middle of April. And Josh Heupel's system got Hendon Hooker and Joe Milton drafted, so I'm not writing off anybody having success at Tennessee as long as he's there.
Most importantly, he wants to be in Knoxville and seems like a great kid from everything I've seen. Let's roll the ball out there and see what happens.
