Coaches Ejected, Teams Pulled Off The Field, The Mother Of A Player Kicked Out For Jumping On Top Of The Dugout. The Samford Vs Mercer Game Was Madness Following A Massive Home Run
Truly a wild scene here over the weekend in an elimination game between Samford and Mercer, I mean things realllllly got out of hand. Samford's Michael Gupton his a 2-run bomb to pad their lead and he was fired up. So fired up he let basically every member of Mercer's squad hear about it. The amount of shit this guy was talking while rounding the bases would make Kevin Garnett blush. Anyone and everyone in an earshot was getting it, second baseman, left fielder, mascot, dugout? They all got it. Gupton was fired up and rightfully so, but maybe a bit too much. Hell, the shortstop tried to follow Gupton to home plate, he wanted all the action. Had to have the umpire sprint from his spot to get in-between Gupton and the dugout as he touched home too, which had Mercer livid.
Mercer's team was so upset at the showboating and hotdogging that they eventually pulled their entire team off the field in protest, yanked em all off the diamond. Not sure why that was the move? But they wanted their guys off the field. The guy talked so much shit that the opposing coaches pulled all their guys, a move I've never seen. Eventually the shortstop for Mercer and Gupton were tossed, which is fine, whatever. A few more coaches were tossed as well. But things were also unfolding in the crowd which got police involved.
The mother of Mercer's shortstop was ejected from the game after she CLIMBED ON TOP OF THE DUGOUT and was yelling! I love that move by her, you're not going to toss her son for simply talking back, she let those umps have it….until she was asked to leave by an armed police officer. Anytime you get the police in the stands talking to a player's mother you know some shit has gone down. 25 minutes later the umps had it all squared away and play resumed, but holy shit what a game. It legit had it all.
Mercer even had their third baseman thrown out as well following a play where he shoved a Samford player after a tag. Bad, bad blood between these guys it seems!
Samford would go on to win and advance and Mercer had to go home while licking their wounds. Tough look for both these teams if you ask me. I'm all for some shit talking, bat flips, playful stuff like that but once you're basically inviting anyone of the diamond to come fight you and screaming into their dugout, you have to know what's going to come from that. College games have been trending this way for a while, on Mostly Sports Brandon and Titus talked about the "Tennesseeification of college baseball" which basically means shit talking your opponent until someone throws a punch or loses their mind. Samford did lose their conference championship game if you were wondering too, I'm sure a lot of folks were rooting for that.
