Arkansas Gets Eliminated From the College World Series in What May Be the Biggest Choke Job in Baseball History
One would think it would be impossible for a college baseball program to ever top the failure of a pop-up falling among three players with that team needing just one more out to win a national championship, only to go on to lose that game and the next one to blow it all. And somehow, Arkansas may have just done it.
It's truly hard to put into words what a monumental choke job this was from the Razorbacks. After scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning to regain the lead, Arkansas needed two more outs to force a winner-take-all game tomorrow night against LSU to advance to the College World Series finals. Which was great news, because Steven Milam rolled over the most tailor-made double play ball you've ever seen in your life that should have ended the game with no drama at all. And for some unfathomable reason, Wehiwa Aloy — who's been one of the best players in the country this season — decided to take one out at third base to erase a runner that meant nothing rather than end the game with a routine double play.
But fine, now you're one out away from ending the game and the tying run still isn't in scoring position. And once again, freshman Arkansas reliever Cole Gibler got Luis Hernandez to sky a fly ball to left field with another chance to end it ... and then Charles Davalan slips, the ball hits off his head and both runs come in to score.
Only Arkansas playing in Omaha could have those two things happen within a matter of a few pitches. Davalan made a physical mistake and those happen. But I've never seen anything like the best shortstop in the country just decide to not turn one of the easiest double plays you're ever going to get to end a game. Unreal.
It seems the "Omahogs" will head back to Fayetteville empty-handed once again. I sincerely look forward to their next trip to the CWS, when we will be certain to see a way to lose a baseball game we've never seen before.
