The Missing Piece: Giants DB Dru Phillips Found The Cheat Code To Success. He Got Surgery So He Can Actually See The Ball In The Air Now
Uh oh. This was the missing piece for the defense. Dru Phillips, who was actually damn good last year as a rookie, figured out the cheat code. He realized he needed to be able to see the ball in the air as a defensive back.
We know about the pass rush and the line that the Giants have. The defense should be the calling card. I was nervous about the defensive backfield, mostly because I don't trust Deonte Banks, but now that I know Dru Phillips can see? Good luck against this defense (assuming everyone stays healthy and it works out). I'm not trying to get ahead of myself, but this is the sort of news that makes me think shit is going to go right this year. Our 2nd year player, who should turn into a leader, can see. That's a massive development. It's basically the second biggest step behind getting a quarterback who can throw the ball.
I gotta admit, this is one of those times I consider myself the luckiest man in the world for not having eye problems. Torn Achilles? Sure. That sucked and it's still not right nearly a year later. But I can adjust with that. Something about not being able to see, having to touch eyeballs to put contacts in or do surgery? No thank you. I'll take the bald head, injury-riddled legs and move on with my life.
This isn't about me. This is about my beloved Giants and the fact we actually have guys who can see, who can throw a ball and Cam Skattebo. Good enough for me to have hope for not a complete shitshow again this year. Baby steps.
