Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) Is Set To Write Denis Villeneuve’s James Bond Movie And I'm Not Sure If That's A Good Thing
ICYMI, James Bond has gone through some changes as a franchise. It's no longer in the hands of the Broccoli family, which produced the movie since the very beginning, and is now in the hands of Amazon. In a movie that instantly wont them a lot of goodwill, they hired Denis Villeneuve, who is probably 1A 1B top of the world with Chris Nolan in the directing world, to headline the new Bond franchise.
I've digested this hire in two parts. The first is that, depending on era, this could be a great fit! In the TV world, he has written three really good series in 'Peaky Blinders', 'Taboo' and 'SAS: Rogue Heroes'. All three shows touch on quintessential aspects of the James Bond world. Basically the intersection of aristocracy and the rogue underbelly of English society while games and plots are dealt with by rich characters. That's perfect for Bond, especially if they decide to do a retro version.
The second part is that, for as great of a showrunner as he has been, Knight's movies have been hit or miss. 'Allied', 'Locked Down', 'The Girl in the Spider's Web', 'Hummingbird' and worst of all 'Serenity'. That movie has a special place in LCB lore, and we refer to it as 'Dad Boat'. It's a movie where the big twist is that the characters are all actually in a video game designed by a child who plays as his dead dad having sex with his mom. Great stuff. However, the hits come with 'Eastern Promises', and the not quite as good 'Locke' and 'Burnt'.
So here is my final verdict: I think Knight is really good at one specific genre of English crime stories which SHOULD transition easily to the Bond franchise.
