It Happened: Mike Francesa Attended The New York Giants/San Fransisco Giants Meet Up 10 Years In The Making
So niche yet so awesome is how I would describe this video. For those not in the know, and all the young bucks reading this website let's start from the beginning.
Mike Francesa is an icon, maybe the biggest icon, is sports talk radio. I feel I have to explain that too. Back before Spotify and Itunes and Sirius/XM radio we had terrestrial radio which most people listened to in their cars. (I wrote a long one about that here) It was AM and FM, sometimes staticy, and sometimes gone all together if you drove in a tunnel, but for a while it was all we had. Francesa hosted Mike and The Mad Dog with Chris Russo. Legendary show of fighting, bickering and interviews etc. In between the banter they would get prank calls. When they broke up, it seemed Francesa would get a bunch of them. One of the most iconic was Dan in Warwick who asked if The San Fransisco Giants and New York Giants met up when they were in town. Francesa rightfully so was insanely confused and kinda angry, which only added to the lure.
Okay, so now that everyone is caught up, let's talk about just how awesome this video is. Long enough ago that it brings back the nostaglia, but not long enough that everyone forgot about it. You immediately knew the reference. Just perfect. And Eli gave us a little extra too:
It seems in his older age, Mike is way more in on the joke and has let his guard down to have some fun with everything and it's good to see. The reason people called so much, and even broke his balls was because they loved the show, and wanted their moment of fame. It was really out of respect. Also like anything with breaking balls, the more it shows it bothered him, the more people wanted to do it. Credit to the Giants social team for setting this up, and again credit to Francesa for being a good sport. We all got a good laugh… with him which is always great to see.
