Hailee Steinfeld Is Making A Movie With DK Metcalf Where They Travel To An Asteroid To Mine For Wealth And You Watch It Through An "Extended Reality" Device. Wait What?
I've written some weird ass blogs here and yet, this is certainly one of the most bizarre headlines of all. Had to triple check it wasn't some photoshopped AI slop just littering the timeline. Somehow, it is a real thing that exists.
Who is it being made for? That's incredibly unknown.
(Deadline) - Immersive thriller 'Asteroid' follows a group of strangers who take the risk of a lifetime to travel to a nearby asteroid for the opportunity to mine for wealth beyond their wildest dreams. The thriller is among 30 works competing in the Venice Film Festival’s Immersive Competition.
Following its Venice premiere, Asteroid will launch later this year on Google’s Android XR platform. 30 Ninjas is an immersive story studio focused on pushed the boundaries of technology and the imagination to create groundbreaking immersive experiences. Since its launch, it has spearheaded the creation of pioneering narratives for AR, VR, and MR devices.
Hmmm so it's strangers "risking it all" on an asteroid together? For the 2nd time this year, PRAY for Josh Allen.
Now if you've never heard of "XR", you're in the same boat as me. Apparently virtual reality is already making leaps we didn't even know were possible. Hard to tell if this is something I'd want to use in order to watch a movie.
Extended Reality (XR) is an overarching term for technologies that merge digital and physical realities, encompassing Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). These technologies enhance or replace a user's view of the world by overlaying digital information onto real environments or by creating fully immersive digital experiences. XR is revolutionizing various industries, from manufacturing and healthcare to education and retail, by transforming consumer experiences and enabling new forms of interaction and digital integration
I still don't fully understand how exactly this content is consumed… If you don't have an Android XR device are you shit out of luck? Can't see myself buying one of those anytime soon. And even if I did, this film sounds more like an extended video game cutscene than anything else. It's gotta be a better experience than that though right? I got no fucking idea brother!
On the positive side, it is written/directed by Doug Liman who made 'The Bourne Identity', 'Edge Of Tomorrow', 'Mr & Mrs. Smith', and the supremely underrated 'Go'. And the cast isn't too shabby! Victor from 'The Penguin' has got some skills for sure and Ron Pearlman always delivers in anything he does.
This will be DK Metcalf's 3rd foray into Hollywood, after appearing as himself on 'Bel-Air' and then playing Coach Hammer in Owen Wilson's movie 'Secret Headquarters'. Wow!
Unfortunately at this time my sources cannot confirm whether DK's good friend PFT Commenter will also be making an appearance in 'Asteroid'.
Seems like the least he could do after PFT handily beat him in that 40 yard race a few years back.
No shame in losing a few steps since the Combine DK… Father Time remains undefeated, even for Michigan Men.
But let's be real, the only reason you clicked into this blog was the real star of the show, Hailee Steinfeld. Congrats on having great taste.
If anybody can make this sci-fi XR experience worth a damn, it's her. Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go research how long it's gonna take until Extended Spit Reality devices get created.
It's the way of the future way of the future.
PS: I can't read about mining asteroids without immediately thinking of the GOAT commentary from Ben Affleck on the 'Armageddon' DVD. Still hits every damn time.
PPS: Owen Wilson was an absolute legend for doing this SNL sketch. Get that paycheck baby, KACHOW!
