Florida Is a National Embarrassment and John Mateer Is Coming for the Heisman: Week 2 CFB Recap

What a Week 2 in college football. It's always the weeks where the slate looks a little barren that things pop off and give us some of the best moments of the season. Let's get into the Week 2 recap.

- Billy Napier Needs to be Fired Today

I don't know what you're waiting for if you're the University of Florida. Selfishly, I very much hope Billy Napier is still the Gators' coach when Tennessee goes to Gainesville in November, but this guy should have been fired before the Sun came up this morning.

Florida has one of the 10 or so most talented rosters in the country and is not going to do anything with it. UF's next six games are at LSU, at Miami, Texas, at Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Georgia. USF is a good football team, but this thing could go very off the rails very quickly.

- StarkVegas Is Back

Speaking of Mississippi State, what a win for Jeff Lebby and the Bulldogs. From up 17-0 at halftime to down 20-17 in the final minute and then pulling off that miracle against No. 12 Arizona State. Blake Shapen looked like he's absolutely in the top half of SEC quarterbacks and the Bulldogs' defense shut out ASU in the first half before getting a massive stop at the goal line to force a field goal and give Mississippi State the chance to go win the game.

That's a solid football team.

- John Mateer Is the Heisman Frontrunner

In terms of SEC quarterbacks, though, it doesn't get any better this season than John Mateer. I know everyone is infatuated with Garrett Nussmeier — and Arch Manning coming into the season — but Mateer just has something about him when you watch him play. Kirk Herbstreit mentioned a compariosn to Baker Mayfield Saturday night and I think that's very apt.

He seems to escape the first guy to get a hand on him every time and can deliver the ball on the run and from different arm slots as well as anyone I've seen in years. He's the real deal and combined with what a Brent Venables defense is always going to look like, Oklahoma is absolutely a College Football Playoff contender.

- Kansas and Missouri Should Be Required By Law To Play Every Season

It is absolutely criminal that Kansas and Missouri went 14 years since their last meeting on the football field and are only scheduled to meet again in 2026, 2031 and 2032. This is one of the most heated rivalries in college football and simply has to be played every season. There's no reason for these teams to not play each other and whoever is responsible for that being the case needs to figure it the hell out.

And by the way, Mizzou has a very manageable schedule the rest of the way and if I had to pick the 12 teams that will be in the Playoff right now, the Tigers would be one of them.

- Dabo Swinney May Soon Have Some Explaining To Do

Clemson ended up beating Troy 27-16, but boy, that does not look anything like a team that could be competing for a national championship like many predicted coming into the season. Cade Klubnik looks nothing like a quarterback capable of leading a team on a deep run and all of a sudden there are a lot more games on the Tigers' schedule that no longer look like cakewalks.

I have my eyes very much on that team going to Atlanta next weekend and potentially going home 1-2.

- Nico Still Sucks

I will probably include this segment every week, because nobody has ever fumbled the bag worse than the Iamaleava family. It's a shame. Be careful from whom you seek advice, kids.
