Viktor Hovland Officially Can't Play Today Which Means We're Getting One Of The Dumbest Rules In Sports - The Ryder Cup Envelope
For those who don't know about the Ryder Cup envelope, we're seeing it now. It's not used often, it's controversial and it's quite frankly idiotic. Viktor Hovland can't play because of injury. Typically you'd see a WD, not great, you lose everything. Not here though. Instead each team writes a name in an envelope
Instead of the player who can't play getting a loss, you each get a half point. Not that it matters since we're getting smoked, but now Europe only needs 2 points to win the Cup. It's a free half point, something Europe screamed about in 1991 with the Steve Pate injury controversy that saw him play on Saturday afternoon and then get ruled out on Sunday.
My point is you shouldn't get rewarded for an injury. If you can't play, you lose, that simple. It's that way with anything and everything else. You don't get a free half point because of an injury. You either go out there and try to play or give up the point. Again, it's not necessarily a big deal in this Ryder Cup because we still wouldn't make a putt against an injured Viktor Hovland, but now we know that Harris English is the last guy on the bench.
So there you have it. 12-5 heading into singles, Harris English won't play because his name is in the envelope. Change the rule, make guys play through injury or forfeit, stop this free half point stuff.
