'The Product's Just Not Very Good' - Troy Aikman Spoke For NFL Fans Everywhere When He Finally Snapped About Penalties And Having To Watch Bad Teams
I can't believe I'm going to say nice things about Troy Aikman, but when we all had to watch this last night you'll see me agreeing with a former Cowboys quarterback. He's right. The NFL is a bad product, especially when we have these teams and games on Monday Night Football. No one wants to watch the Jets, Dolphins or Bengals. The Broncos are decent, but boring. But it's more than that.
The refs are ridiculous. Everything is a penalty, everything is a stoppage in play, everything is sloppy. There's all these rules that seem made up and refs will just throw a penalty on every play. That's where Aikman snapped. Stuff that has no impact on the play are getting called and instead of moving on with the game, we get like 1st and 35 with a draw coming up on second down. There were 18 penalties last night in a game that wasn't competitive and boring.
Can we just stop putting the Bengals on primetime too? Without Joe Burrow they are one of the most boring teams in the country who stinks. You get to see Ja'Marr Chase get mad that he doesn't get the ball and then it's a bad offensive line, a defense who gets diced and roughly 42 penalties. We can turn it off at home, but we don't because our brains are owned by football. But, poor Troy Aikman has to sit here and watch it in person.
Every week we have a game that's just filled with flags. Quarterbacks can underthrow a receiver and it's a bigger benefit than putting it on the numbers because it's pass interference 99% of the time. Refs decide to call holding to start the game and then stop and then do it again on a pivotal play. The product is bad and it starts with the reffing. I don't blame these players for having no idea what's a penalty anymore, no one does. Where I do blame the players and teams and coaches is the actual product. We have a few entertaining teams in the league and a few good teams in the league. Everyone else sucks to watch and it gets amplified during these primetime games.
So shout out Troy Aikman. We need more people to say whatever is on their mind when calling a game and not carrying water for a bad product. Just an awful night of football.
