A Peaky Blinders Sequel Series Set In The 1950's Is In The Works
“Peaky Blinders” is coming back to the small screen with a new generation of Shelbys.
Netflix and the BBC revealed on Thursday that a sequel series to the beloved show from writer and creator Steven Knight, set in 1953 Britain, has received a two-season order. Original “Peaky Blinders” star Cillian Murphy is on board as an executive producer.
“After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel,” the plot description reads. “In a new era of Steven Knight’s ‘Peaky Blinders,’ the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.”
I'm a little torn on this.
I don't feel that Peaky Blinders ended on a high note. I really liked basically every season of the show but that last one kind of let everything go with a whimper. I don't know if it's because the cast already had one foot out the door or maybe because creator Steven Knight had other projects he wanted to focus on. Speaking of Knight, I don't see anything in here detailing his specific involvement in this, which is also not a good sign. He is currently writing Denis Villenueve's James Bond movie so I can't imagine this would be a priority even if he was.
On the other hand, there is obviously some potential here. There are a lot of cool English criminal underground stories that you can make in a really stylized way with that time period. You could even do some stuff with the Kray Twins, who were played by Peaky Blinders alum Tom Hardy in the movie 'Legend'.
If Knight was writing it, I would be in. Without him, I'm not very hopeful.
