Some Things Are Bigger Than Sports: End Your Night With Rick Neuheisel Reacting To His Son Jerry’s Victory With UCLA

Fathers and sons in sports. How fucking beautiful huh? Listen, college football will always hold a special place in my heart because I grew up watching games with my Dad. I grew up like most NY’ers who rooted for Notre Dame because our dad’s and grandfathers watched them on TV. Singing the fight song on Kazoo’s at Breezy Point. Listening to the games on the radio down at the beach Labor Day weekend. Even little random moments of college football like, I distinctly remember coming home with creamsicle ice from Ralph’s one night a Tennessee game being on so we at 7 or 8 years old decided we would root for Tennesee that game. To falling in love with Oregon when my parents had to fix up our new house.

To being lucky enough to play college football with guys who became lifelong friends, to watching that insane 2007 season unfold after our games.

To Halloween weekend my senior year watching Texas Tech beat Texas in one of my favorite games of all time.

To being lucky enough to cover the sport on a podcast every week for the last 10 years to the bad beats, the crazy moments, the funny stories, The Bush Push, Vince Young’s run, K-State Game of the years etc. College Football is the damn best, and I’ll always thank my dad for getting me into the game and watching The Neuheisel family today just reminds you how great this game is and how many more fathers and sons it will connect over the years.

A beautiful … beautiful thing.
