Alex Pereira Walked Right Through Magomed Anklaev And Demolished Him To Regain The UFC Light Heavyweight Championship
Holy shit. Just like that, Alex Pereira is back on top of the UFC Light Heavyweight mountain. I'm starting to think maybe he and his team were telling the truth when they said he went into that first fight with Anklaev at 30-40% health, because that performance was insane.
After being taken to his limit five months ago, Poatan just marched across the cage and finished Magomed Anklaev in a minute and twenty seconds this time around. I almost can't believe what I just watched; and it's not even like I thought Anklaev was unbeatable or Pereira was washed or anything - I just never imagined it would look like that!
Pereira did the 'Look What You Made Me Do' celebration over Ank's defeated body after the finish, and even hit him with a "Chama" when he got up, putting an end to this rivalry for the time being.
I'd imagine they move forward with Poatan vs Carlos Ulberg next, but Jiri Prochazka is right back in the mix as well. There's some talk about a move to heavyweight, and Alex made it sound like he was going to call out Jon Jones before the tragedy in his family this week; he then asked for a moment of silence for Arthur Jones, which Jon appreciated....
….but honestly I'd be shocked if Alex didn't stay at 205 for at least a few more fights. It's the best case scenario for him right now with a bunch of exciting marketable strikers at the top of the division, and I'm sure the UFC would like him to stay put for now too. We'll see if the post-fight pressure gives us any clarity on that.
It was a great card overall tonight - and shoutout to Poatan for ending it on a phenomenal note!
