Rock ALWAYS Beats Scissors... A WNBA Blog

This is the first WNBA blog I have ever written, so please be patient.
Certain records in sports will never be broken…
- Cal Ripken Jr's 2,632 consecutive games played
- Wayne Gretzky's 2,857 career points
- Richard Petty's 200 career NASCAR wins AND his 27 wins in a single season
And last night we got another… Check this out.
If you couldn't get through the first 15 seconds of this clip because you are so unbelievably sexist, you missed WNBA superstar A'ja Wilson ("A'ja" is pronounced like the continent of "Asia", apparently) hitting a game winning jumper with .01 seconds left on the clock to propel her Las Vegas Aces to a victory over the Phoenix Mercury (pronounced "HER-cury") in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals. The Aces now lead the series 3-0, and are looking to complete their sweep tonight at Game 4 in Phoenix.
But where was the historical athletic feat that will never be matched?
I'm glad you asked.
If you go back to that final shot, you'll see that A'ja drains it over two Mercury defenders: #14, DeWanna Bonner, and #25, Alyssa Thomas… And that's where the historic part comes in.
DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas have been dating since 2021. In 2023, Thomas decided that she "liked so shoulda put a ring on it" and proposed to DeWanna in the parking lot of a local Subaru dealership.
I'm kidding about the Subaru part, but the happy couple is set to wed sometime in 2026.
I wish these two athletes nothing but the best of luck and unlimited happiness in their lives together. However, I also want to point out that they are on the wrong side of history because I don't think we'll ever see a situation where ANY professional athlete hits a game-winning shot over the outstretched defensive arms of a married couple… Well… Technically, "engaged couple", but I'm assuming these two ladies eventually make it down the aisle because I am a fan of true love.
So, next time you're in a bar spouting sports trivia to your drunken friends, on top of all the facts you will spew about Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Phelps, Joe DiMaggio, Cy Young, Jerry Rice, or Pete Rose, make sure you also throw out this new little factoid about the historically fantastic night A'ja Wilson just had… Or, at least, harken back to the title of this blog and reminisce about the time a WNBA star proved that (a well-shot) ROCK ALWAYS BEAT SCISSORS.

Congrats to A'ja and the rest of the Las Vegas Aces on what I assume was a DOMINANT season, and take a report.
