This Footage of Jordon Hudson Taking Charge on the Set of Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia's Coaching Video is Really ... Something
You may remember that one of the benefits of having Bill Belichick temporarily unemployed for most of 2024 was that we got more unfiltered access to the greatest mind in the history of the sport of tackle football. Most memorably on his Manningcast appearances. But also his own YouTube channel series "Coach," where he, Matt Patricia, Michael Lombardi and others sat dow to take in-depth looks at some of the finer points of the game Belichick mastered while sitting at his father's knee at the Naval Academy breaking down film. The show had 75,000 subscribers. And this first episode, looking at Week 1 of the NFL season and explaining the concepts of the West Coast Offense, had nearly 230,000 views. Another with Jason Kelce, discussing the nuances of the center position, had 100,000 more than that.
Sadly, you missed the chance to Like, Share and Subscribe and BANG that Notification button once he took the job at North Carolina, and scrapped the series after 18 episodes. But they're still very evergreen and worth watching if you're into learning about the finer points of the game from the most detail-oriented coach every to strap on a headset.
Well the one thing we didn't get was a Behind the Scenes of the show. I'm speaking as someone who always enjoyed "Making Of" features, whether we're talking about documentaries, books about filming "Jaws," DVD commentaries, Peter Jackson's "Get Back" series about the Beatles or what have you, I've always been fascinated by the creative process of great artists.
And now thanks to the guy who has established himself as the full time specialist on all things Belichick-Jordon Hudson-related, we have it a look behind the curtain at the making of "Coach" we didn't know we needed:
I mean, that is one incredible piece of leaked video. And credit where it's due to Pablo Torre. Sometimes a Journo can master one topic and make a career out of it. Bob Woodward was just a DC city reporter who broke the Watergate story and it springboarded him into becoming a nationally recognized news commentator. Greta Van Sustern parlayed the OJ Simpson trial into her own nightly cable news show. This guy is covering this dating particular dating relationship 24/7/365 and breaking all the news that's fit to print.
And the spinning newspaper with the splash headline across the top on his bit of high-octane, nitro-powered, Earth-shattering drama? It reads: "HUDSON TAKES CHARGE OF BELICHICK'S COACHING VIDEO!!!"
Extra, extra. Read all about it. Stop the presses, Chief. I've got a story that's gonna knock this town on its ear.
It seems Jordon is a little on the bossy side and has many ideas about how her boyfriend should conduct his business. Nobody could've seen this coming!
I'll concede it's not a great look. When Hudson's trying to tell two dedicated lifers in the coaching profession (let's not forget that Patricia was making a fortune designing submarines but went back to football for next to no money because he missed it so much) that they shouldn't have "Keep Dallas out of the end zone" as a bullet point because it should go without saying, you can see them struggling to explain how that kind of coaching point won them Super Bowls.
And it's hard to not to feel for Patricia and the other guy as she's talking and they're hanging their heads, staring into the middle distance, and trying desperately not to say a word. You can see it in their eyes as they're thinking, "Is she going to be done talking soon?" as time stands still for them. We've all been there when a friend you care about is dating someone high maintenance and they come as a package deal. In that situation, you just have to abide the best you can.
Just to circle back to the Behind the Scenes content I mentioned, in that "Get Back" docuseries, one of the most pleasant surprises is seeing a notorious figure like Yoko Ono, and to a much lesser extent Linda McCartney, just sit back out of the way and let the geniuses they married do their genius thing. This video is anything but a surprise. As expected, Hudson is explaining things to Bill like she's a mom helping her fourth grader with his Science Fair project. Except in this analogy, he's a grown man and his name is Albert Einstein.
But while it is a bad look and extremely difficult for any devout, fundamentalist Belichickian to watch, it's nothing we haven't gotten used to a long time ago.
