Beware of Land Mines: Week 10 CFB Recap

Rule No. 1 of seemingly underwhelming Saturdays: gird your loins if you are a team that's favored, because somebody is getting clipped. We actually ended up with a few teams catching stray bullets this weekend as the Playoff picture changed drastically on what looked like it could be a sleepy start to November.

Here's the recap:

- ACC Chaos Reigns Supreme

Congratulations to the Virginia Cavaliers, who now stand alone atop the ACC standings at 5-0 in league play after Georgia Tech lost its first game of the season at NC State. Miami fell to 2-2 in the ACC after its loss to SMU and the Hurricanes' once promising College Football Playoff hopes are now hanging by a thread.

I have absolutely no idea what is going to happen in this conference. A Pittsburgh-Duke title game is perfectly reasonable and I don't think most people even know those teams are in the mix at all. We are going to get classic ACC chaos this November.

- Vanderbilt Somehow Whiffed on the Easiest Part of a Nearly Unthinkable Comeback

Texas very nearly one-upped Mississippi State's fourth quarter collapse from a week ago by coming within inches of giving Vanderbilt the ball down a field goal with 33 seconds to go. The Longhorns entered the final frame up 34-10 before allowing the Commodores to score 21 unanswered points before somehow not coming up with that onside kick.

The back end of Vandy's schedule is certainly manageable — particularly with a trip to Knoxville now looking less daunting — but the Dores may be looking back on that play in December thinking about what could have been.

- Does Something Happen With Dabo?

Lost in the massive failures to meet expectations from Penn State, LSU and Florida is the fact that preseason No. 4 Clemson is now 3-5 following a loss to Duke at home. The Tigers were on the wrong end of a tough pass interference call that would have changed the outcome of the game, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

I just wonder if Dabo Swinney wants to start fresh somewhere else. And if ever there was a coaching cycle to do that, it's this one. Any program would sign up for what Swinney was able to do at Clemson, but sometimes even the best things just run their course.

He's been snippy with the fans and media for more than a year now, the players have clearly quit and things seem to be getting much worse rather than better.

- This Was So Fucking Stupid

I mean, what the hell, dude? Just tackle the guy.

At least the entrance was cool, I guess.

- Thoughts and Prayers to Georgia Bettors

They don't get any more disgusting than that, folks.

I suppose it should be of some comfort that Georgia was in a dogfight with Florida the entire game and you didn't really deserve to win anyway, but those are the bets that just completely flip an entire day one way or the other.
