Sydney Sweeney's New Boxing Biopic Had One Of The Worst Opening Weekends In Movie History
TOUGH year to be an actor who planned on being taken seriously after doing a combat sports biopic passion project, huh? First The Rock's 'The Smashing Machine' flopped, and now Sydney Sweeney's 'Christy' is off to one of the worst starts in the history of wide-release cinema. And to be fair 'The Smashing Machine' at least made $11,386,575 domestic, $20,257,055 worldwide - I don't think 'Christy' will get anywhere near that after a disastrous $1,344,534 worldwide opening weekend.
It's a shame because the Christy Martin story is an unbelievable tale, and you could tell Sydney Sweeney really put a lot into this role trying to do her justice....
....but I will say, I didn't catch a ton of marketing for this movie outside of posts on Sydney Sweeney's Instagram. I never saw trailers in theaters or on TV, I didn't see her on the interview circuit - it was pretty much exclusively the every-now-and-then reminder on an Instagram story. Maybe they thought that was all they needed, with over 25 million followers to work with, but it clearly wasn't enough.
Here is the full top ten list of biggest flops for releases in 2000+ theaters....
1. The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (2012) - $443,901 or $206/per theater
2. Delgo (2008) - $511,920 or $237/per theater
3. Playmobil: The Movie (2019) - $656,530 or $281/per theater
4. The King's Daughter (2022) - $723,802 or $334/per theater
5. Profile (2021) - $730,290 or $359/per theater
6. Scoob! (2021) - $850,000 or $340/per theater
7. The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020) - $1,126,401 or $510/per theater
8. Hitpig (2024) - $1,154,144 or $548/per theater
9. Christy (2025) - $1,305,000 or $649/per theater
10. The Empty Man (2020) - $1,310,326 or $646/per theater
I don't even know how it's possible for a Sydney Sweeney led movie to make only $649 per theater. She coulda made more just asking her followers to Venmo her! And that list is especially tough considering a big chunk of it is COVID movies.
Reviews aren't bad by any means, so if you're interested - check it out fast before it is pulled from theaters….

….but honestly, you may just be better off staying home and watching 'Untold: Deal with the Devil' on Netflix for the true story.
