Ryan Day Is Strategically Holding Back Ohio State's Tempo And Explosiveness, But Says The Buckeyes Will "Turn Up The Gas" Soon
So Ohio State ranks 119th in the country by only running 63 offensive plays per game. Other college football contenders such as Indiana, Georgia, and Mississippi are all running over 70 plays per game, and Top 10 ranked Texas Tech is all the way up at 77 plays per game on offense. Now factor in that the Buckeyes are 2nd in the country by only having to put their defense on the field for 58 plays a game, and you’ll see that Ryan Day really has made it a point of emphasis to slow things down this season. I mean, if you use the averages, over the course of a 12 game season, the Red Raiders will have played more than 300 more plays which is 2 full extra games in terms of hits than the Buckeyes....
Now obviously not everyone is in the same situation in college football. Some need to treat each week like the Super Bowl. Some know that a conference title would mean the world to their schools. And some coaches, like Ryan Day, knows that it’s National Title or bust and the only way to do that is to play a 16 game or sometimes even a 17 game season.
So while it makes me happy that Ryan Day is coaching for the bigger picture of another National Title when we play games against teams like Purdue and Minnesota that we could beat blindfolded, what makes me even happier is what he said on his radio show about kicking it up a notch when we need to. And I quote, "When it's time to turn up the gas, we will".
“When it’s time to turn up the gas, we will” - my goodness that gives me goosebumps to hear from the head ball coach.
Now I don’t know if that means the Michigan game, the Big Ten Championship, or when the playoffs come, but I cannot wait to see what turning up the gas means to this team that is already beating the ever loving piss out of everyone in their tracks. Part of me thinks that we have plays for Jeremiah and Carnell that we haven’t even shown yet, just waiting for the right moment. And I’m not talking about needing a big 3rd down conversion in a close game. I’m talking about hey we’re in Ann Arbor, let’s turn up the gas and go from this conservative football team to the greatest show on turf, with the best defense in the country, and let’s throw punch after punch after punch.
