LSU Claims It Hasn't Technically Fired Brian Kelly Yet and Wants To Fire Him For Cause Since He's Refused To Accept a Reduced Buyout and Wants His Full $54 Million

LSU fired Brian Kelly on October 26, the day after the Tigers' 49-25 home loss to Texas A&M — or maybe not, at least according to the university.

Kelly is now suing LSU for his full contract buyout of $54 million after the school tried to get him to accept less on his way out the door. Unless they have some sort of insane dirt on him, I don't really understand why he would do that, so the two sides seem to be at an impasse. LSU is now seeking to fire Kelly for cause, which would nullify his entire buyout and send him packing with nothing, though schools that have tried this in the past fail nearly every single time.

The ability to fire Kelly for cause also becomes remarkably tenuous when you read the October 26 statement from LSU athletic director Scott Woodward — who has also since been canned — which reads, "Ultimately, the success at the level that LSU demands simply did not materialize, and I made the decision to make a change after last night’s game."

So you got rid of this guy weeks ago because the football team's performance wasn't acceptable, but actually you never fired him and now you're going to fire him for real with cause. Best of luck with that one.

This seems like something that should have been worked out before Kelly was let go, which may be part of the reason Woodward now finds himself without a job, also. I never thought Brian Kelly would be the sympathetic figure in any situation, but go get that bag, king.
