'The Running Man' Is A Flawed But Undeniably Entertaining Adaptation
A man joins a game show in which contestants, allowed to go anywhere in the world, are pursued by "hunters" hired to kill them.
The reimagining of Stephen King Classic is finally in theaters and I have now seen it TWICE. I think this is one best reviewed in a pro and con.
Pros:
- I believe you get what is advertised. Lots of action and some laughs.
- Glenn Powell was a great anchor for this movie. He has this endless well of charisma that can make anything work
- From a production standpoint, I loved the look. We interviewed Edgar Wright and I mentioned how I liked the retro-futuristic look and he told me this is called Cassette Futurism.
- You get a good combination of big, real locations and dystopian CGI future cities.
Cons:
- I think it was missing the signature quickness of an Edgar Wright script.
- Tonally, I think it could have committed more in one direction. Maybe be more of a campy comedy or more of an action movie. It got a little muddied at points.
Overall, it is undeniably entertaining and I think worth a theater watch. We have an interview with director Edgar Wright, the mind behind 'Shaun of the Dead', 'Hot Fuzz', 'Baby Driver' and more coming up on Monday for you as well.
