YOU MAKE THE CALL: Are We Supposed To Be Leaving A Tip When We Return A Golf Cart?
So, full disclosure, I'm not a good golfer.
I played in high school (poorly), but I basically stopped playing because the best horse racing was on Saturdays, and if I was going to stay happily married, I couldn't do both. I choose horses.
When I do play, I play fast, and I don't complain much. So there's that. But my son plays a lot, and sometimes the cart guy will just grab his clubs and help me get them into the car. When he does, I tip him a few bucks.
However, when I return the cart directly to the cart return, it's clean, and I grab the clubs myself, I don't leave a tip.
Am I supposed to be? Is that asshole behavior?
As for the picture above, I would never leave a cart like that as an adult. The anxiety over someone telling just one other person that I left a cart like that is too much to bear. It's easy enough to throw away my own trash anyway.
But if I did leave a cart like this as an adult? I'd 100% leave a tip. Maybe I'm in a rush and I can't do it myself? Oh yeah, leaving $5. Do I know for sure I would have done the same as a 20-something? Nope.
But I'm not a real Golf Guy. Fore Play Senior Editor Kyle Tims is.
I asked him about the picture and whether you should be leaving a tip if you return a cart like that.
"If you leave a cart like that, you're a dick, but the least you can do is tip. Even if you don't throw beer cans all over, throwing a $5 or a $10 bill on the clip of the steering wheel is a nice thing to do. They have to clean the cart, and it's a nice gesture to throw a couple of bucks."
Shit. I don't leave a tip with a clean cart.
I figured they'd spray it down and get it prepped for the next group, and I made their lives easier by returning it clean. I guess I should be tipping every time? Now I do feel like an asshole.
As for this cart, I think tipping is an obvious yes.
But as always, you make the call.
