Miss Watermelon Races Today For Go Go Greys Stable And Takes On One Of Dave's Newest Rivals

Red Sox / Yankees

Michigan / Ohio State

Portnoy / Zedan

We're not quite there yet with millionaire horse owner Dave vs. billionaire horse owner Amr Zedan, but we'll get a showdown between the two Sunday night. Well, their horses, at least.

Sunday's Race 8 at Del Mar (7:02 EST) pits Zedan's Nimah against Go Go Grey Stables' Miss Watermelon.

This will be Miss Watermelon's second career start. She debuted back in October at Keeneland, going a route on the grass. Sunday, she'll be cutting back to a sprint on the main (dirt) track.

I thought she had a bit of a trip that day and was willing to bet her back on the grass. The dirt might be a better spot for a bet.

This is a look at Miss Watermelon from The Daily Racing Form. I'm focused on the trainer stats listed there at the bottom for trainer Jonathan Thomas. Anything above 20% is considered strong in racing, and Thomas excels across multiple stats that fit with Miss Watermelon and this race.

When you dig deeper into DRF, you find that Thomas is 3-for-6 with 2-year-olds going turf to dirt. Strong angle here.

Dave posted this very cool jockey cam video of Miss Watermelon's last workout. There are professionals who get paid to watch workouts and analyze them, and those who watched this one said it was very strong. In fact, her last two works, both on the Del Mar track she'll race on today, got good reviews.

In this handicapper's opinion, the main threats to Miss Watermelon (#9) on Sunday are Zedan's Nimah (#2) and Spendthrift Farms' Lerios (#6), who has some serious breeding and has also been working well. But with a race under her belt, Miss Watermelon has the experience edge.

Looks like an excellent race on the track Sunday at Delmar.

Off the track, Dave and Go Go Greys Stable is looking to avenge a defeat to Zedan Racing at this past summer's Saratoga Sale. Dave bid $2.8 million on a son of the mighty Gun Runner - Zedan went to $2.9 million, and in Dave's own words, "Crushed his dreams."

Zedan and trainer Bob Baffert then crashed Dave's interview on ABR, pouring salt in the wound.

Dave says he'll be at Del Mar for Miss Watermelon's race today. Hopefully, Zedan and Baffert will be there, too.

I think Miss Watermelon has a big chance on Sunday. She's 4-1 on the morning line, but as Dave has noted with other Go Go Greys runners, his horses get bet. I'd still be betting to win at 3-1 or better. You can watch and bet on the race on the DK Horse App - that's my plan.

And I'll be rooting for Miss Watermelon to win and help avenge Dave's loss to Zedan in the sales ring.
