NEW DELHI: Being christened after a cab company is unusual. But this is exactly what Babli, who delivered her baby boy in a Uber cab, wants for her child. The woman hired the cab after repeated emergency calls for an ambulance went unanswered on Thursday night. Shahnawaz, the driver, said the woman from Devli in south Delhi called him asking to be taken to a government hospital. She was with two other women. “I had asked them to call an ambulance, but the women said that they couldn’t get one,” said Shahnawaz. He drove the trio towards Safdarjung Hospital, but had to halt soon after. “The woman was writhing in pain and her friends did not know what to do,” said Shahnawaz. The trio made a labour room of the cab and helped the woman deliver the baby. “I pulled out the towels from the seats and poured some drinking water into a bowl. The child was born within minutes and I was really happy to see that he was responding,” he said. Without losing a moment, Shahnawaz then rushed the woman to the hospital where he was asked to head towards the emergency unit. “He picked me up, put me on a stretcher and dragged it into the hospital,” said the woman. “The doctors asked if I was her husband. I narrated the entire incident after which they congratulated me. This was one of the happiest moment of my life,” said Shahnawaz. The woman’s family now wants the driver to name the child. At a ceremony on Sunday, Shahnawaz will name the baby after the company he works for— Uber.

Uber is a smart company.  That much is clear.  Pretty sure it’s worth about 100 trillion dollars at this point but this should be their next venture: pregnant women.  Picking up pregnant women and driving them to hospital as they’re about to give birth.  Think about it. Pick up pregnant women, they’re so excited they don’t have to wait for the ambulance to get there so they name their kid Uber just like this lady did.  That’s free advertising for as long as the baby is alive. We’re talking potentially 60-90 years of free advertising. Every form they fill out, every homework assignment they write their name on, every time they say their name out loud when meeting someone new, all of that is advertising for Uber that they don’t have to pay a dime for.  So you have drivers target areas where there are a lot of pregnant women. The data has to be out there regarding neighborhoods with the most pregnant women. Just have drivers hang out in those areas. Or better yet, offer people a lump sum up front on their way to the hospital to name their kid Uber. Shea is a beautiful name. It really is. I couldn’t be happier for KFC and Mrs. KFC. But if Uber maybe tosses them a few bucks for diapers, formula, a car seat, size 10.5 Jordans etc, I bet they could’ve convinced them to name the kid Uber. This is the next frontier in corporate marketing: getting people to name their babies after your company. You’re either growing or you’re dying, there ain’t no third direction.
