Maryland Gets Their QB In Alabama's Player Of The Year Ty Pigrome

Sun - Maryland continued its search for its quarterback of the future on Wednesday when it snagged the commitment of quarterback Ty Pigrome of Clay-Chalkville High in Pinson, Ala. Pigrome picked the Terps over former ACC foe Virginia Tech, Big Ten Conference East rival Rutgers and Tulane on National Signing Day. Pigrome is a three-star dual-threat quarterback who finished as the runner-up for Alabama’s Mr. Football award the past two years. Pigrome was the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year after he threw for more than 3,000 yards and 44 touchdowns while rushing for more than 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns. He went 29-1 as a starter.

247sports.com ranks Pigrome as the No. 63 athlete in the country, while Rivals.com ranks him as the No. 25 prospect in Alabama. Pigrome also received an offer from Arkansas State, where Maryland offensive coordinator Walt Bell served in the same capacity. Bell’s uptempo spread offense can be conducive to running quarterbacks, and Pigrome, despite his size — he’s listed at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds — could thrive in that kind of system.

We long followed, watched, and then waved goodbye to Maryland’s top QB prospect in years, Dwayne Haskins. Haskins, a 4 star QB from Maryland, was heralded, probably unfairly, as the guy that would save Terps football. A lot of it fell on him- he was lon the outspoken leader of #TheMovement, the push the University has made in recent years to keep the top football prospects in state. Haskins was the biggest cheerleader of #TheMovement…until his favorite coach was fired and he flipped his commitment from Maryland to Ohio State. It wasn’t the best day for Maryland fans, but it definitely wasn’t the worst. Haskins still has a ton to prove, like all recruits, but was already acting like he saved the program. He wasn’t a DJ Durkin recruit, or a Walt Bell recruit. If a guy doesn’t want to be here, especially a 17/18 year old kid, then it’s definitely the best thing for the program for him to go elsewhere.

Which leads us to today, National Signing Day, where Walt and co. have signed up dual-threat QB Ty Pigrome from Alabama. He’s a 2 time Alabama Mr. Football runner up, and was this year’s Gatorade Player of the Year in Alabama. He threw for over 3,000 yards, rushed for over 1,500, and fits much, muchhhh better into Walt Bell’s uptempo offense. Haskins who?

This signing really shows that one kid does not make or break a program. Coach Durkin and Bell are building this program from the ground up. Maryland probably won’t be good this season. But they have inked I believe it’s 7 guys out of the state of Florida already, many of them 3 stars and up.

My favorite signing though? Safety Qwuantrezz Knight. Qwuantrezz. A name straight out of the Key and Peele sketch. Sky is the limit if your name is Qwuantrezz.

Also a big Jake Funk guy. White RB named Jake Funk with dreamy hair? Pray for the Big 10.
