An Entire Irish Pub Singing Along To "Mr. Brightside" To Honor Their Dead Friend Is The Greatest Sendoff Imaginable
Killorglin, Ireland — For a large group of mourners in Killorglin, Ireland, the passing of a close friend wasn’t about tears but instead was about honoring his memory by rocking out. When a farmer, Ger “Farmer” Foley, who had cystic fibrosis, died last week at the age of 45, friends gathered at a pub to come together to celebrate his life, according to the Huffington Post. It became clear it wasn’t going to the typical somber affair, though, when Brian O’Sullivan climbed on top of a counter and began speaking. “[Ger] is salt of the earth, he will never be replaced, but we will remember him forever in our lives,” he begins. He then announces to Farmer’s friends and family that he’s going to perform “the most appropriate song that you could ever get for this man; it’s ‘Mr. Brightside.'” “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers begins to play in the background, and O’Sullivan sings and dances. It isn’t long before the whole pub is singing and dancing with him, jumping up and down, rocking out any sorrow they were holding onto.
Best send off ever for a dead friend or best send off ever for a dead friend? That was fucking awesome. Funerals are for the birds. Everybody is sad and crying. They play bagpipes at the funerals of my family members and it just melts everyone into a puddle of sobs. Nobody wants to do that. I hope this is the new tradition to honor the dead. You head to the nearest bar, get drunk as shit, throw on Mr. Brightside and sing it at the top of your lungs. That’s the way to do it. That’s how you honor somebody. Maybe some people cry. Maybe they don’t. Maybe a guy rips off his shirt and leaps into the crowd like it’s a rock concert. Maybe not. Hopefully that happens. All I’m saying is funerals don’t lend themselves to being happy and singing at the top of your lungs. Celebrate instead of mourning. Just push those sad feelings deep down inside you and let them come out in unhealthy ways over time. Not to mention Mr. Brightside is a great song. It really is.
