Hillary Clinton And Bill DeBlasio Make A "Colored People" Joke

NYDN – They may be skilled in political theater — but when Mayor de Blasio and Hillary Clinton appeared on stage together, their comic turn became a tragic gaffe.  In a skit at Saturday night’s Inner Circle show, Clinton joined de Blasio as a surprise guest and ribbed him for delaying his endorsement of her presidential campaign. Their big moment became a big blunder when a tasteless joke — built off the stereotype that black people are chronically late — fell flat. “Thanks for the endorsement. Took you long enough,” Clinton deadpanned.   “Sorry, Hillary. I was running on C.P. Time,” de Blasio replied, riffing on the phrase “colored people time,” meaning always late. “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom Jr., who is black and plays Aaron Burr in the hit production, addressed the mayor from the stage. “That’s not — I don’t like jokes like that, Bill,” Odom said. Clinton then stepped in to complete the brief gaggable gag with an assurance that her belated supporter meant, “‘Cautious Politician Time.’ I’ve been there.” All three were in on the sketch at the annual charity show put on by the New York press corps to roast the mayor.  When video of the tone-deaf joke emerged online — and picked up steam on social media — De Blasio laughed it off during a CNN interview. “It was clearly a staged event,” he told Erin Burnett on “OutFront.” “I think people are missing the point here.”  Later, a mayoral spokesperson tried to clear the air with an event stronger statement: “In an evening of satire, the only person this was meant to mock was the mayor himself, period. Certainly no one intended to offend anyone.” Odom’s rep said he was unavailable for comment. For some online observers, the damage was done. “Hillary Clinton and Bill de Blasio made a racist joke together. How much information do you need to prove she ain’t here for us?” asked Twitter user @venusselenite. 

Listen that joked sucked. Awful delivery. Long winded punchline. Phony laughs from both of them. And if we’re being honest I dont know how “colored people” isnt actually considered the most offensive phrase of all. I always laugh my ass off when there’s a whole list of racist terms that are major no-no’s and “COLORED PEOPLE” and “The BLACKS” is somehow considered ok. Those sound so much more cringeworthy to me than some of the other shit on the No Fly List.

But all that being said, everyone knows if you got a black dude in on the joke, its all gravy baby. I mean it is an undeniable, irrefutable truth in 2016 that if you’ve got a person from Hamilton on stage with you, you’ve got immunity from being racist. Its like the “I have black friends” excuse times a billion. You see this guy here? He’s in the black Broadway show. The one were all the presidents and shit are black. He likes me. He’s laughing. So you have to, also. If I were a politician I’d have the entire cast of Hamilton follow me around wherever I go. Put your foot in your mouth about Black Lives Matter or say something that sounds white and privileged and just point to your cast of Hamilton and have them laugh or give you a thumbs up and then your racism never happened. Hamilton seal of approval erases it all.

PS – Hillary Clinton looks like she’s from the future with these zipperless, buttonless jacket dress things. It looks like something from Back to the Future II
